I had been running a little more in the spring and had been adding on a few miles. I decided to get myself up to a half. I spent about a month or so pushing the miles up and up to see how my knee would do. It still gets pretty sore, but it was handling it! I was way nervous for the canyon and the downhill slope most of the race. At some points it got pretty steep, which brings its own challenges! The crazy part was how EARLY they started this race. I had to be there super early. I left my house at around 3am. I was done with the race by 7:15. It was absolutely nuts! Anyways, I went all by myself and I have never done that before either. I overheard by a pacer that it was easier to just let go and not try to hold back on the hills. I had gotten myself to a pretty decent pace on my runs and was hoping for around a 1:45 if all went well. It was freezing at the top with the wind! When it started, I just listened to my music and went. I stopped for no aid station and just stuck in my zone. I had to stay focused to watch my footing, especially at the pace I was trying to keep. I did not hold back! Im the end I pushed through the last couple miles of fairly flat and came to the finish. My parents surprised me by showing up! It was so sweet of them. They took pictures and video. I came in at a 1:32. HOLY SMOKES! That is an average of 7 min miles. I was so shocked I cried a little. I mean, I was DEAD by the end so exhausted and could barely walk, but I was so surprised. I had a long year trying to get back to that pace after I hurst my knee so bad last year, and it was a nice reward. I ended up 2nd in my age group.
Ran into Shayla from my soccer days!
