Bun Bun

On our nightly Millie walk, me and the little boys ran into a bunny. He looked terrified at the side of the road in the middle of construction in an empty lot. The nearest homes were 2 streets over and fields/school were all around. I tried to grab him and fumbled when I did and dropped him, but I am slightly scared of bunnies. Yup I admit it. He hightailed it under some broken concrete so I just left no knowing what else to do. After I told the big boys and showed them his picture, they were determined to go catch it. Dans response, "Great. If you catch it we are keeping it." Well, the boys and I smoked the bunny out and Levi grabbed him. We put him under a laundry basket and gave him all the water and veggies his little heart desired. I posted all over the neighborhoods sites and at least 3 different lost and found pet sites in the neighborhood. Based on this bunnies domesticated mannerisms and where he was dumped, we were pretty sure he was brought there and abandoned. Knowing a fox lives  by those fields, he would have been dead soon after I am sure. After more than a week with no responses, we decided to buy this guy a little more comfortable home. I still told the kids not to get too attached. Well, as the weeks went on they did a little bit. We named him Bun Bun after about a month. Millie LOVED the bunny. Probably a little too much. We slowly introduced her to it afraid she would eat it or something. When we finally let them go together without a cage to separate them, Millie just liked Bun Bun like her puppies. They were cute together! Here comes the sad part, a lady in our previous ward asked if anyone wanted their old outside bunny hutch, so I jumped on it. It came with a leash for the bunny too. Makayla had a ball walking the bunny up and down the street. It was about the funniest thing I had ever seen. Well, we let Bun Bun sleep outside in his new digs. Makayla checked on him that morning and he was fine. But, a few hours later Levi went to get him and bring him in before it got super hot and he was dead. We are fairly certain he was just too hot (even with shade over the cage), but who knows! The kids are passed it now and already want to get new bunnies, but we had some funny and sad responses for a few days after. Makayla was super curious at first when I told her, "Can I see him?" and "Do we eat him?" That one killed me!!! But, when she realized a minute later that he was gone, she was beside herself. She would bust into tears randomly throughout the day saying she missed him. I never thought I would like a bunny, but this guy was the sweetest. We have a video of Graham just picking him up and swinging him around and putting him back down over and over. The most patient thing ever and never bit the kids. He loved to climb on laps and would just sit right next to your left and snuggle. We may get bunnies again and I hope they are exactly like him! Rest in Peace Bun Bun, you brought some joy and experience into these kids lives and sure made a fun memory for this summer!
